about

MANAGER'S NOTE:

On 23rd June 2011, an ambitious project kicked off in the form of an online rock band, in the quiet backrooms of an online forum. So how do you bring the ostensibly arduous task of assembling a rock band from all over the world to life, into one unified legion? The old joke declares that one way in which you can fit an elephant into a glove compartment is by looking at him through the wrong end of a pair of binoculars, picking him up with tweezers and moving him, thus reducing him to normal height. This largely bloated conception of forming an online rock band was – somehow – shrunk down to standard size.

The band’s first ever release came in the form of a single on 12th August 2011, followed by another single release later that winter. Shortly afterwards, in what was a seemingly crisis situation, the group was in threat of disbanding. It seemed the group would plummet into a deep thicket of mud-ridden secretion and meet with that old friend: The ugly end. Nothing much to write home about really, and what a Christmas stocking on a tombstone ending that would have been.

Fast forward two years from its inception and the band have an impressive aggregation of 19 songs in their music catalogue. With this debut full-length album release to commemorate the group’s second year running (previous releases include five singles and an EP), Frozen Coco establishes a brand new, instantly recognisable sound, making them an even stronger force to reckon with than ever before. Yes, there are no low caliber recordings which may have otherwise prompted indignant questions such as "what brand of calculator was this cow manure recorded with?".

Let’s be clear here: Frozen Coco did not invent the notion of an online band. There have been countless other online acts established, but not of this stature. The band is of unique, quintessential nature in its own right; all members were brought together purely by their mutual love for music, and not via any relations outside of the information superhighway. Even to date, the band has had no outside dealings or interactions. Pretty impressive from the band who nearly fell to mud, eh?

But mud does not turn into gold easily: Money’s nice, but if Frozen Coco hadn’t made a bundle, the band wouldn’t still be around – that’s speaking figuratively. The fans’ continued support gives us a license to kill; it enables us with more freedom and breathing space to experiment in order to create new sounds. The new eponymous album features nine formerly unheard originals, together with previously released hit singles, crafted and re-mastered with the fans’ best interests kept in mind.

Constructing this album has been nothing short of pure fun. We set about piling the track listing by evaluating a list of several albums worth of original compositions to form one killer record. In the end, the result was as rewarding as the process, after five hushed months without any release at all and being missed in action. This time around, the band used different techniques than before while recording; instead of setting out each instrument part on sheet music or tablature, a healthy proportion of the songs were improvised along the way. The composer would share a song with the band mates, and each player would rig up their own, creative instrument part. This maximized the input from each member and certainly added more artistic vibe to such songs. Moreover, collaborating on writing lyrics to songs other than your own is a very gratifying and fruitful experience as well. For the first time, the band has incorporated synthesiser effects and orchestral arrangements which sets the stage perfectly for the next studio album to come.

Frozen Coco, it can be said, is largely responsible for the rise of similar online bands ever since. The band undoubtedly set a precedent in the times to come. As time progressed and more online bands came along, it seemed the group would become only that: Just another online rock band. The group was nothing more than Frank Sinatra is to exclusive metal lovers, although on a much smaller scale of course, making its members slightly less conspicuous than a bunch of extras on the movie set of “The Dark Knight”. In addition, the musicality employed by the band in its early days was, if not unpretentious, not overly impressive, striking no exciting chord or bringing out any such ‘wow’ factor. However, time has shown the increase in maturity of the songwriting and instrument arrangements, woven together to form one intricate and densely colourful fabric.

Two years ago, or even a year back, we never could have anticipated doing this album. But now it seems the band has developed well enough over the past few months, and added enough meat to their ever increasing archive to be capable of producing such work. Two years may seem like a long time, but the band members are still in their youth years, with the ink on their birth certificates barely drying up now. So long as the motivation to get back on the road is always there, Frozen Coco will be around always too. For now though, we give you a new, well cultivated list of numbers ranging from fast paced rock to those slow, moody ballads for you to enjoy.

Yep, after waiting so long, the rock quartet is back again (double pun intended)!
