"So this won't be the last farewell,
For we shall part to meet again"
It has been exactly 10 years since Frozen Coco's first single and over seven since those words were uttered on the band's last release. Although none of us imagined we would stick around a decade later, the lyric seems somewhat prescient in hindsight.
If you have heard of Frozen Coco you might simply (in an amazing coincidence) have the titles of two recent Disney films in mind… Or you could be a fan of one of the earliest online rock groups to exist, years before the advent of "Zoom bands" over the pandemic.
During early lockdown last year I revisited some of my writing that was never put to tape, for the sole reason of having something to do. The several Internet music collaborations during quarantine reminded me of us at 14 and made me think, "I've done that gig before" and that it might be interesting to reunite the band.
Some song fragments that had been lying around for years were soon put together and other parts newly written. The lyric draft drifted towards a theme of urgency as it drew upon various things that were happening around me and life in general at the time. Other lines were nicked out of a couple of poems I had written, complete with a not-so-subtle Neil Young reference.
By the time the demo was shared with the rest of the band the song had about 20 chords. Bastián was enthused and turned in a groovy bass performance I am immensely proud of, while Matt was up to the task of learning the song on piano. To complete the line-up we had returning guest singer and "honorary Coco" Mari on backing vocal duties.
With members currently situated in the UK, Chile and the USA, it was nice to hear after all these years what we could make with a bunch of lo-fi, garage band style recording setups. The single was recorded and slated for late 2020 but being tied up with university studies meant that this was pushed back for the 10 year anniversary of our first release. The song's sentiments generally do seem to hold up even in 2021.
Whether you know us from the old days or have newly discovered the band, thank you for taking the time to listen to our music. This has been a pleasant distraction from our respective day jobs and that does not mean Frozen Coco has to stop here: Among some of the songs I revisited was the entirety of our unreleased second album, most of which I was pleasantly surprised to find was near completion. That would make a delightful and quick project for another time.
It's good to be back.

lyrics
VERSE 1:
Waking up in the shoes of somebody that you used to be
And you don't know what the world's been coming to
Looking back with 20/20 vision life never seems
The way you thought it would
VERSE 2:
I saw us just the other day in your decaying photograph
In seven years does it still sing the same for you?
Your coat's got heavy since I left the city and I found my band
And it can't stop, won't stop tearing at your gut and weighing you down
CHORUS:
And maybe, it never really was the last goodbye
But I've been searching for a hand glass just to read between the lines
And maybe, the game's taken you by surprise
'Cause you've been waiting long inside for a second roll of the dice
VERSE 3:
Picture us half-drunk and unfunny now at twenty three
Living either side of who you are and who you want to be
You called my bluff but your mind's hung up on a memory
That's getting hard to see
CHORUS:
And maybe, it never really was the last goodbye
But I've been searching for a hand glass just to read between the lines
And maybe, the game's taken you by surprise
'Cause you've been waiting long inside for a second roll of the dice
BRIDGE:
The leaves have gathered out upon the lawn
Unspoken words left hanging just to fall
Funny how it seems that silence is so deafening
When I can't even hear if you're calling, yeah, yeah, yeah
Those words cut through you just like broken glass
The voice behind the fractured mirrors of your past
Reflecting on this path we're going through
If I knew, oh, if I only knew
These times, they change so quickly
Your life, it's changed you too
Some kind of new beginning
Not all that new to you
CHORUS:
And maybe, it never really was the last goodbye
But I've been searching for a hand glass just to read between the lines
And maybe, the game's taken you by surprise
'Cause you've been waiting long inside for a second roll of the dice
